What is The Early Years Foundation Stage?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) is the period of education from birth to 5.

During the Foundation Stage the children work towards the early learning goals. Most of the children are expected to be working securely within the early learning goals by the end of the Foundation Stage.

Within the Foundation Stage, children further their understanding by playing, talking, observing, planning, questioning, experimenting, testing, reflecting and responding to adults and to each other.

The Importance of Play

Staff will observe the children during their play and make notes about their interests. This documentation is then used to plan activities to take the children's learning forward. Children are keen and excited to learn when the stimulus has stemmed from their own idea.

In the EYFS a significant amount of learning takes place in the outdoor environment. The school provides a range of waterproof clothing but you may also consider sending appropriate clothing with your child depending on weather conditions.

A substantial risk assessment has been carried out to ensure the outdoor environment is safe. However during outside learning we encourage the children to use all of their senses to explore the environment and as a result clothes may get dirty!

How can you help your child?

EYFS staff try to share information about each child as regularly as possible. We have a range of systems in place so that you can communicate with us about the learning that takes place at home.

We advise that the children take part in some form of reading activity each night. The school will provide a reading comments book for you to write about how you feel your child is responding to reading. In turn staff will also write in the book to inform you about reading in school. Children also bring home phonemes to learn each week on a key ring.

We aim to display a range of homework activities so that children, staff and parents value what is happening at home.

Personal, Social and Emotional Development

This area of learning is about emotional wellbeing, knowing who you are and where you fit in and about feeling good about yourself. It is also about developing respect for others, social competence and a positive disposition to learn.

An example of one of these goals is: 'To form good relationships with adults and peers'

Communication, Language and Literacy

This area of learning includes communication, speaking and listening in different situations and for different purposes, being read a wide range of books and reading simple texts and writing for a variety of purposes.

An example of one of these goals is: 'Read a range of familiar and common words and simple sentences independently.'

Problem solving, Reasoning and Numeracy

This area of learning includes counting, sorting, matching, seeking patterns, making connections, recognising relationships and working with numbers, shape, space and measures. Mathematical understanding should be developed through stories, songs, games and imaginative play, so that the children enjoy using and experimenting with numbers.

An example of one of theses goals is: 'In practical activities and discussions begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting.'

Knowledge and Understanding of the World

In this area of learning the children are developing the crucial knowledge, skills and understanding to help make sense of the world. This forms the foundation for later work in science, design technology, information and communication technology (ICT), history and geography.

An example of one of these goals is: 'Find out about and identify the uses of everyday technology and use information and communication technology and programmable toys to support their learning.'

Physical Development

Physical development in the Foundation Stage is about improving skills of co-ordination, control, manipulation and movement. Physical development has two other important aspects. It helps children gain confidence in what they can do and enables them to feel the positive benefits of being healthy and active. Effective physical development helps children develop a positive sense of well-being.

An example of one of these goals is: 'Handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials safely with increasing control.'

Creative Development

Being creative enables children to make a connection between one area of learning and another and so extend their learning. This area of learning includes art, music, dance, role-play and imaginative play.

An example of this goal is: 'Explore colour, texture, shape, form and space in two or three dimensions.'

    We are having a cake sale for the whole school on Friday 20th December, 2019 for 'The Children's Society'. Children can purchase cakes for a minimum donation of 20p per cake. We are also asking for donations of cakes & biscuits for the sale.
  • Come Festive Day! - Friday 13th December, 2019
    To coincide with our school Christmas Dinner and the PTA`Funtastic Festive Event’, children can to come to school wearing a festive jumper, if they wish. The jumper will replace their school jumper, all other clothing should remain school uniform.
