Reading, Writing and Mathematics

Reading and Writing

In Reception and Year 1 children are taught using a "phonics first" approach to quickly develop reading and writing skills. They have a daily "Letters and Sounds" lesson where they learn grapheme/ phoneme correspondence, the skills of segmenting and blending and build up a sight vocabulary of "tricky" words. Phonically decodable reading books are provided for reading in school and at home (The school uses the "Phonic Bug"  and "Bug Club" schemes).

As children progress, "phonics first" remains at the heart of our approach but from Year 2 onwards they begin to develop their etymological and morphemic knowledge through spelling and reading lessons. They gradually establish rules and strategies for spelling and reading longer, more complex words. They learn how to use context to establish meaning of new vocabulary and develop a wide range of comprehension skills.

Children also learn how to write neatly and fluently with a cursive script right from the start. Writing as readers and reading as writers helps them to develop understanding of a wide range

of genres allowing them to become effective communicators.

The last year has seen significant changes to how we teach maths based on our developing understanding of the new national curriculum that was introduced in 2014. Maths is now taught using a "Mastery" model with planning based around key concepts rather than procedures. The aim is for pupils to develop fluency through understanding.Pupils are taught to reason and problem solving. We also aim to teach in such a way that all our children come to understand that everyone can learn maths to a high standard.
